Getting Started With Keto

Getting started with keto can seem overwhelming and exciting at the same time! I’m so excited that you are interested in joining me on this journey.  This post is going to go through some of my favorite meals from morning to night.  This will give you some examples of options I choose from and how I approach my keto lifestyle.  If you follow me on instagram you will see that I’ve come up with an alternative for nearly all of my favorite meals and desserts!  Its been an exciting way to bring my creativity  and love for food together while focusing on my health.  Please don’t forget to review the terms of use for this website as this is not intended to be medical advice.

How many carbs do you have a day?

Many people will start off with 20 net carbs for the day to kickstart the keto process. Once their body is in Ketosis they may increase their carb count but typically no more than 50 carbs a day. I have kept my lifestyle at 20 net carbs as my goal over the long term but I count net carbs, not total carbs.

Net carbs are going to be the carb count minus the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols. There are different types of sugar alcohols but I’m finding that so many companies are making it more clear if there is a sugar alcohol in their product. Basically, if it is not going to affect your blood sugar levels with a spike then you will maintain your fat-burning state because your body isn’t using the sugars for fuels.

How do you feel when you start?

Keto flu or “carb flu” may happen. As your body switches from using glucose (sugar) for energy to fat stored in your body resulting in ketones being burned off. This may make you feel a little “off”. This is different for different people. For me in particular I felt super exhausted. For more information on the keto flu check out my other blog post coming soon called “Keto Flu.”

What do you typically eat for breakfast?

All right so let’s start with breakfast. For breakfast eggs are a staple in the low-carb lifestyle. I many times will do scrambled eggs and I will mix in some spinach and cheese and have a side of bacon and a slice of low carb toast. I will top my toast with this jelly from Nature’s Hollow that has no added sugar and lots of butter!

I also was able to find a low-carb cereal it’s by the company called magic spoon while this cereal will cost you a whopping $10 per box with a 4 box minimum order.  But sometimes it’s just what you need for a quick and easy breakfast option while living on a keto lifestyle.

Another breakfast staple would be the pancake and waffle mix birch benders makes a really good one. They have a chocolate chip one as well as a frozen waffle option that is SUEPR YUMMY!! Keto Candy girl also makes another great breakfast pancake mix and those are alternatives for breakfast food.

Another great breakfast option is Red’s all-natural breakfast sandwiches they are super easy to make you can buy them at Costco and they are delicious. It’s an egg breakfast sandwich comprised of sausage and cheese and the cooked egg is the patty. They are so yummy!!

What do you eat for Lunch?

For lunch, I made a change and will do a salad many times. Salads are pretty easy to get super creative with while on keto. You can top with egg and throw some crumbled bacon in there and some blueberries.  Sometimes I will use fried pork skins and crumpled them up to make “croutons” that give it that crunch that I really missed. Add in some avocado and you are adding in some healthy fats which is a major win!

Sometimes I will do you a sandwich I have found different low-carb bread so I have made everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to turkey sandwiches try tip sandwiches the list goes on and on you can insert whatever your favorite sandwich meat is and still enjoy it while on keto.  Another favorite lunch option is a hot dog!  Watch out becuase some have more carbs inthe meat than others.  To prevent from sacrificing the flavor I will use Applegates hot dogs and the beef one is zero carbs per dog.  Other brands will add in some carbs to their hotdog meat.  I find this at sprouts most of the time but you can find these at most any major grocery store.  The reason I stay strict with the carbs on this one is becuase the hotdog bread is going to come in at 6 net carbs per bun!  Sometimes you can get them from Amazon or directly from Sola from their online website

What do you eat for Dinner?

For dinner I get really creative just because you are allowed to have a lot of proteins I do everything from salmon, chicken, pork, seafood the list goes on and on, and are usually pair it with cauliflower rice. I will cook it differently depending on the type of food that I making. I have done cauliflower fried rice, a cauliflower garlic rice and sometimes I just do plain cauliflower rice. I also like to pair my with broccoli sometimes I do cheesy broccoli or I use Chef Shamy’s amazing jars of butter with minced garlic and I will broil my broccoli in the toaster oven it’s so yummy! On my Instagram stories, I will usually walk you through my day in food. I LOVE food so you are bound to see something that you may want to try!

Another favorite of mine for dinner is pizza! Yep, you heard it! You can have pizza on keto!! The brand Chompies makes an amazing pizza crust and it’s only three net carbs for half of the entire pizza.  It’s about the size of a medium pizza from a regular pizza shop and you can have a lot of fun and creativity with what you put on top of your pizza and it’s fast, easy, and yummy!!

Another favorite of mine is a hamburger!! There are a couple of different bands that I like to use they range from being three net carbs to six net carbs per bun.  The three carbs one is made by Galasso’s bakery which you can get at Costco.  The 6 carbs one is by Sola which you can get from keto candy girl.  That way you can still have fun while out grilling with friends or even going out to eat. If I’m going out I will just bring my own keto bun to the restaurant and just swap it out once my food comes.

One of my ultimate favorites is homemade chicken alfredo pasta! Yup you heard it Pasta while keto is possible.  Keto Candy Girl once again sells an amazing assortment of these pastas from the Great Low Carb Bread Co. One tip about this pasta is you will want to nearly double the boil time on the noodle I find that the texture that way is actually better than regular pasta!  Such a win!

Can you have dessert while on a Keto lifestyle?

Yess!! Now when it comes to desserts that’s a whole notha level haha!! I have a whole page dedicated to my top five keto desserts and once again on my Instagram page daily you will see all of the desserts that I have while on keto!

I hope this helps you in getting started with some different meal options while on keto. Very soon I will also be uploading some step-by-step video tutorials of some of my favorite recipes that will be available on my YouTube channel. So make sure you subscribe so that once I do upload those you’ll be the first to know!
